Starting in the 2026/2027 academic year, Ukrainian general secondary education institutions will introduce a model curriculum for an elective integrated reading literacy course titled "Reading as a Superpower," designed for 5th-grade students. According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the course will cover 35 academic hours per year (one hour per week). This initiative forms part of the "New Ukrainian School" reform and the "Education for Life" framework. The primary goal of the course is to strengthen students' reading proficiency and enable them to apply these skills in everyday life, aligning with priorities highlighted by the PISA 2025 international study.
The program will supplement main courses in Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature, and world literature through the systematic analysis of texts across diverse formats and styles. Rather than covering extensive literary works, instruction will focus on analyzing short genres and key text passages directly in class. In addition to textual content, significant emphasis will be placed on graphic literacy (working with infographics, maps, and charts), as well as critical thinking and media literacy—teaching students to distinguish facts from opinions, detect manipulation, and evaluate information sources.
Student assessment will follow a competency-based approach, prioritizing formative assessment and constructive feedback. Final evaluation will be based on practical project work, requiring students to develop applied products such as guidebooks, posters, travel guides, and comics.
