Volunteering to count toward University students’ academic practice

A new law signed by President Zelensky allows university students in Ukraine to count their volunteer activities as part of their academic practice. The legislation, known as Bill No. 11159, introduces amendments to several existing laws aimed at actively engaging students in volunteer projects.

By participating in volunteer work, students not only contribute to social and charitable initiatives but can also have their volunteer hours recognized as academic credit.

The law further obliges university administrations to promote volunteering among students and encourage their involvement in civic and community activities.

Prospective university applicants will be able to include details of their volunteer experience in their motivation letters during the admissions process and may attach supporting documents confirming their participation in volunteer projects.

The authors of the law emphasize that volunteering helps make university graduates more competitive in the job market.
