Education During War: How Communities Restore Learning Despite DestructionThe social video project “Education During War,” created by the charitable foundation savED in collaboration with Ukraïner, is dedicated to restoring learning in communities affected by Russian aggression. The series of short videos shows how towns and villages in Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Odesa regions are giving children the opportunity to study again, even under extremely difficult conditions.

The project’s creators share stories of communities that experienced occupation, school destruction, and prolonged alerts. They emphasize that children’s right to a normal childhood and quality education is something local residents continue to fight for despite the war. According to Ukraïner director Mykola Nosko, education has become a symbol of returning to normal life.

The first episode tells the story of Bohdanivka in Kyiv region, where Russian occupiers burned down a school and kindergarten in 2022. Temporary solutions included the digital educational center “Vulyk” and a modular space from savED, which allowed in-person learning to resume until the school could be rebuilt. The local community believes that education is the foundation for hope in the future.

Each story also touches on broader challenges of Ukrainian education during the war: the lack of in-person interaction between children, learning losses due to prolonged online education, the need for properly equipped shelters, and the development of extracurricular activities. savED research shows that almost half of children in frontline regions are still learning exclusively online, and most schools acknowledge significant gaps in students’ knowledge.

savED co-founder Hanna Novosad emphasizes that schools become places where communities recover — not only educationally, but socially and emotionally. Teachers and children, after experiencing trauma, come together to restore stability and safety to their environment.
