Inclusive education: improving accessibility in educational institutions of Cherkasy region

Over 2,000 children with special educational needs are currently receiving inclusive education in the Cherkasy region. This includes 383 institutions of general secondary and preschool education, where various measures to ensure barrier-free access are actively being implemented.

More than 1,000 teaching and childcare assistants support the educational process, and 9 special classes operate within three municipal schools in Cherkasy. Additionally, over 200 resource rooms have been established in schools and kindergartens across the region to foster the development of social and communication skills.

Children with special educational needs are also actively engaged in extracurricular activities. They take part in clubs, interest-based groups, competitions, and festivals. Furthermore, the region hosts 25 inclusive resource centers that contribute to developing children’s talents and interests.

To ensure unimpeded access to educational facilities for people with limited mobility, the region is implementing physical accessibility solutions such as exterior ramps and specialized lifting devices. Some institutions are equipped with sanitary and hygiene facilities, and 15 school buses have been adapted for the transportation of students with reduced mobility. At present, the region has an additional need for 23 specially equipped vehicles to transport children with special educational needs.
